Among the other troubles which
can be checked in the complexity of alcohol related and multidimensional
problems and generally in the troubles of behaviour, the most constant is
spiritual trouble.
In this trouble we see the problems determined by the refusal to accept
of oneself, of one’s behaviour and one’s role in the community, of existing
social culture, of prevailing social justice. This trouble is associated
with a feeling of impotence in front of the problem and of impossibility of
understanding it.
The servant-teacher and the Club must be able to
capture the spiritual trouble and to allow a large space to its verbal
expression, stimulating the growth and maturation, in other words, a
longitudinal progressive change towards its own perfection that is never
achieved.
Achieving perfection would mean the end of human social cycle.
At first people were astonished by those
discussions, but today everyone considers that anthropological spirituality
is a subject to be talked about. Spirituality in the anthropological sense
is closely connected to ethics in alcohol programmes.
The Clubs are not connected to any religion or religious or political
idea and have no prevailing ideology. After behavioural changes start in the
Club, each person must go along with other people in spite of individual
differences, and to respect each personality.
The Club work should not consist of a monotonous behaviour, but should
result in a free family and social growth and maturing. The servant-teacher
must feel the existence of spiritual difficulties and leave enough room for
their articulation.
The terminological variety in alcohol related problems often results in
situations that make it difficult to understand each other and communicate.
For that reason it was suggested at one of the Assisi Congresses that a
group should be formed to compile a terminological dictionary for this
field. It is enough to mention only some of the terms; alcoholism (the word
is used less and less and we are speaking about alcohol related problems),
addiction, use and abuse (it is difficult to talk about the use of toxic
substances so every use is abuse), abstinence (abstinence is a part of
healthy behaviour and a healthy lifestyle and it comes with a sober way of
living so that sobriety is a better term than abstinence), harmful drinking
(the use of toxic substances is always harmful so there is no harmful and
harmless drinking), excessive and problematic drinking, etc. |
